Del Mar Butterfly House
San Diego, California
Architect: Sanctuary Architects
Plan North Engineers partnered with Sanctuary Architects to bring the Del Mar Butterfly House to life—an elegant mid-century modern home currently under construction outside of San Diego along the Southern California coast. Designed with precision to maximize sweeping views of Torrey Pines and the Pacific Ocean, the home’s defining butterfly roof, cantilevered decks, and slender steel columns create an airy architectural rhythm. Beneath its calm simplicity lies a technically sophisticated structural system, meticulously engineered to meet California’s rigorous seismic and coastal wind demands.
This project embodies personalized, sustainable design. Rainwater is harvested to nourish terraced gardens flowing from the kitchen to the yard. Pocketing sliding doors erase the line between indoors and out, while a rooftop family room—with radiant heaters, ocean breezes, and panoramic views—sits above an open-air kitchen and game room, connected by a spiral stair and integrated dumbwaiter. In close collaboration with the design team, our custom structural solutions support seamless, elevated living without compromising integrity or performance. At Plan North, we make the complex look simple—delivering responsive, relationship-driven engineering that enhances high design with confidence, care, and technical excellence.
