Lost River Meadow

Mazama, WA

Architect: PBW Architects
Structural: Plan North Engineers

Plan North Engineers provided structural engineering for the Lost River Meadow Residence, a custom home near Mazama, Washington, set within a meadow and woodland landscape at the base of Goat Peak. Built atop a dry river bed, the site’s poor soils required a mat slab foundation to provide stability and distribute loads. Designed to capture 360-degree mountain views, engineered roof trusses and a C-channel moment frame enable long, open spans that support floor-to-ceiling glazing and a vaulted living space—maintaining uninterrupted sightlines while resisting wind and seismic forces.

Working in close collaboration with PBW Architects, Plan North aligned the structural system with the architectural vision defined by restraint, clarity, and connection to place. The home’s linear layout and low shed roof required efficient structural solutions compatible with clerestory glazing and wide openings. Through detailed modeling and analysis, the gravity and lateral system was designed to balance performance and constructability while quietly supporting the experience of the space. The result is a residence where structure enhances durability and resilience without competing with the surrounding landscape.
